Every September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month at PBE. This September we encourage you to consider the mental side of falls prevention (along with the physical side).
Our weekly tips will be all about ways to keep the brain active because an alert mind is better equipped to keep your body safe.
According to doctors, activities that stimulate your brain help to build new connections between nerve cells and may even help generate new brain cells (AKA neurons). Since we know that physical exercise helps your body build new muscle tissue and strengthens bones, it makes sense that mental exercise would be similarly rejuvenating for the brain.
Here are some suggestions for where to look to find games to keep the mind sharp:
- Lumosity offers fun brain training games developed by experts on their website. They also have a free app for your smart phone. They often update with new games too, so it’s hard to lose interest.
- Braingle is a popular site full of brainteasers, trivia, riddles, logic puzzles, and other mind puzzles.
- The NY Times provides their classic daily crossword puzzles and other fun brain games to play.
- Or if you prefer offline forms of brain stimulation, playing chess with a good friend over tea (or another favorite beverage) is a great option.
